National Childhood Obesity Month

This month is National Childhood Obesity Month.  It's sad that this is a big enough problem for them to have to dedicate a month to it to bring awareness.  Did you know that about 20% of American children are obese? (source) This number doesn't even count the 'overweight' population.

In my opinion, the biggest reason why this is such an issue in our country is that 34% of adults in America are also obese (source). Parents are not setting good examples for their children.  Be a better father and care for your child's physical health.  Make sure you provide healthy choices and encourage then to play outside or find a sport for a hobby.

Being obese wouldn't be as big of a deal it if didn't increase the risk for the following conditions:
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Metabolic Syndrome
  • High Cholesterol
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Asthma (and other breathing problems)
  • Sleep Disorders
  • Early Puberty or Menstruation
  • Low self-esteem, depression, bullying, etc.
Are you setting a good example for your children?
There was a show on TV a couple years ago (not sure if its still on), called "honey, we're killing the kids." It was about parents of unhealthy and obese children and how much impact they have on their children's future.  Do you make healthy lifestyle choices? do you exercise? do you go to parks, walks, or spend any time outside?  If not, don't expect your children to either.  Do it for your children.  Make sure to have healthy food in the home, pack healthy school lunches, and include fruits and vegetables daily.

Let Me Know in the Comments - Should parents be accountable? is this child abuse? is it neglect? should the powers that be get involved when parents are contributing to obese children?
