5 Ways to be a Better Father: #1 - Quality Time/Getting Involved

One of my first posts as a blogger, was "My Top 5 Ways to be a Better Father."  I have decided that these 5 things are so important that each needs its own post.  So, over time, I will be addressing each of my original top 5 ways to be a Better Father. Remember that these are in no particular order...

#1: Quality Time and Getting Involved-
Fathers are an important part of a child's life (children are also an important part of a father's life, you can learn a lot from your kids if you pay attention).  The first rule of being a father is to actually spend time with your children.  There are so many demands on our time, but we should make sure we have our priorities straight and make sure we spend quality time with our family.  I was lucky enough to have a father that was always there for me and spent time with me; I hope I can do the same for my children.

If you have more than one child (which I will in a few months!), make sure you spend time with them individually.  They each need a special connection with their father, and you will probably find that connection in different ways for each child.

Here's a quick list of some ways to get involved:
  • Eat dinner together
  • One-on-one conversations
  • Participate in your child's hobby
  • Help with homework
  • Have your kids help you with a project
  • Coach your child's sports team (or help them practice)
  • Take them fishing
  • Read them books
  • etc...
These are just a few to get the ball rolling, I know that there are infinite ways in which you spend time with your kids.  What do you do to spend time with your children? How does it make you a Better Father?
